Surat Peserta; MAINSTREAMING PEACE EDUCATION: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC POLICY AND NETWORKING Yogyakarta, 30 June – 2 July 2010
BACKGROUND Central Board Muhammadiyah in collaboration with Cheng Ho Multi Culture Trust of Malaysia, with support from Centre for Dialogue and Cooperation among Civilisations (CDCC) organised the first and second World Peace Forum (WPF) in 2006 and 2008. Under the spirit of One Humanity, One Destiny, and One Responsibilitys, religious leaders, policy makers, intellectuals, politicians and activists from different backgrounds and nationalities engaged in productive dialogues expressed their commitment to the creation of a safer and a more peaceful world for all mankind. Surat Peserta; Two years after the second WPF, the world has been noted progresses in the efforts to seek education for peace. International, regional and national dialogues initiated by both governments and civil societies have brought about understanding and creative cooperation between and among countries and peace organizations. These achievements, however, do not mean that the planet is far from tensions and conflicts among nations or factions. Bloodsheds, wars, killings and other kind of violence still exist in many corners of the world. Xenophobia, racism and terorism, and forms of violance have led to human rights violations, directly or indirectly. These situations necessitate continuing efforts from all parties. In addition to “hard-power” efforts through peace treaties, sending peace keeping missions, and military security approaches, the creation of peace requires “soft-power” programs which can be developed through education. Peace relates to both physical and spiritual endeavours. Peace deals with both outer and inner dimension of human being. Peaceful mind leads to peaceful behavior. In this context, education as a cultural and pedagogic processes play pivotal roles in the creation of men and women as agents of peace of the world.
